Certifications that actually move your career (and the duds)

Some certificates unlock interviews; others are expensive wall art. How to tell before you spend the money and the weekends.

Certifications are signals, and signals only matter if the receiver values them. The test isn't how hard the cert was — it's whether hiring managers filter by it.

Worth the effort

• Gatekeeper certs — cloud, security, accounting, project management: fields where job posts literally list them.
• License-adjacent — anything regulators or clients require.

Usually duds

• Generic 'completion' certificates from video platforms — the course may be great; the paper means little.
• Certs substituting for portfolio — in creative and code work, shipped projects beat badges every time.
