Job titles vs. real scope: what actually builds market value

Titles are local currency — they inflate and deflate by company. Scope is the hard currency: what you owned, how big it was, what happened because of you.

What the market prices

  • Owned outcomes — 'ran the launch that added 30% signups' beats 'Senior' anything.
  • Team and budget size — concrete, comparable, unfakeable.
  • Hard problems — turnarounds and zero-to-one builds carry a premium regardless of title.

When title and scope diverge, negotiate the scope now and let the title catch up — then translate honestly on your resume ('title X, operating as Y').

CaveatTitles do gate some doors — recruiter searches and visa rules among them. Take the free title bump when offered; just never trade scope for it.
