When to ask for a raise — and the case you need to build first
Timing and evidence beat courage. The raise conversation works when you've spent two months preparing for ten minutes of talking.

Most raise requests fail because they're framed as a need ('rent went up') instead of a value statement ('here's what I now deliver'). Companies pay for the second one.
Build the case
- A wins document — outcomes with numbers, kept as they happen, not remembered later.
- Scope creep receipts — list what you do now that wasn't in your original role.
- Market data — your researched band, stated calmly, not as a threat.
Pick the moment
After a visible win, before budget season, at a scheduled review — never in a hallway, never mid-crisis.
If it's a noAsk what specifically would make it a yes in six months, and get it in writing. That's either a roadmap or a signal to leave — both useful.
